A short check can show whether a learner needs help with the calculation or with understanding the situation. Complete these ten original Grade 6 questions, then discuss the methods with a teacher or parent. This is revision support, not an official KPSEA paper.
On this page: original practice, explained answers and 20 short FAQs. Complete the tasks before reading the answers.
Let the learner show a method
Encourage a number sentence, diagram or short explanation. When an answer is wrong, ask what the question is asking before demonstrating a method. This helps distinguish a reading difficulty from an arithmetic difficulty.
Use everyday quantities carefully
Money, travel and measurement contexts can make questions familiar, but units still matter. Read whether the task asks for the total, the amount left, the difference or the cost of one item.
Plan the next short session
Select two questions the learner found difficult. Practise the underlying skill with new values and return to a mixed set later. Avoid giving a long worksheet of the same calculation when the actual problem was interpreting the question.
Practice questions and explained answers
1. Write the value of 7 in 47,326.
Show suggested answer
The 7 is in the thousands place, so its value is 7,000.
2. Calculate 3,684 + 2,957.
Show suggested answer
Add by place value, regrouping where necessary. The sum is 6,641.
3. Find 3/5 of 250.
Show suggested answer
250 ÷ 5 = 50, then 50 × 3 = 150.
4. Four exercise books cost KSh 35 each. A learner pays KSh 200. Find the change.
Show suggested answer
Total cost = 4 × 35 = KSh 140. Change = 200 − 140 = KSh 60.
5. A lesson starts at 9:25 a.m. and lasts 45 minutes. When does it end?
Show suggested answer
35 minutes takes the time to 10:00 a.m.; another 10 minutes gives 10:10 a.m.
6. Find the perimeter of a rectangle 12 cm by 7 cm.
Show suggested answer
Perimeter = 2 × (12 + 7) = 38 cm.
7. Convert 2.5 litres to millilitres.
Show suggested answer
1 litre = 1,000 millilitres. Therefore 2.5 litres = 2,500 millilitres.
8. Find the missing number: 6, 12, 18, __, 30.
Show suggested answer
The pattern adds 6, so the missing number is 24.
9. A class reads 8, 12, 10 and 14 books in four weeks. How many altogether?
Show suggested answer
8 + 12 + 10 + 14 = 44 books.
10. A ribbon is 3 m long. Pieces of 75 cm are cut from it without waste. How many pieces?
Show suggested answer
3 m = 300 cm. 300 ÷ 75 = 4 pieces.
Frequently asked questions
Is digit value the same as the digit?
No. Place value determines what the digit represents.
Why regroup in addition?
Ten units in one column become one unit in the next column.
How do I find a fraction of a quantity?
Divide by the denominator, then multiply by the numerator.
Should I calculate change before total cost?
Find the amount spent first, then subtract from the money paid.
Why split the time at the hour?
It can make elapsed-time calculation easier to follow.
Is perimeter measured in square centimetres?
No. It is a length, measured here in centimetres.
Why convert litres to millilitres?
It expresses the capacity in the requested unit.
Can a pattern have more than one possible rule?
Sometimes; use the simplest rule consistent with the given sequence and instructions.
What does altogether suggest?
It often asks for a total, but read the complete situation.
Why convert metres before dividing?
The ribbon and piece lengths must use compatible units.
How do I check the sum 6,641?
Estimate the addends or subtract one addend from the total.
Can 3/5 of a quantity exceed that quantity?
Not for a positive whole in this example because 3/5 is less than one.
Why is the change not KSh 165?
Four books are bought, so all four costs must be included.
Does crossing 10 o’clock change a 45-minute duration?
No. The elapsed duration remains the same.
What is the difference between area and perimeter?
Area covers a surface; perimeter measures its boundary.
How many millilitres make half a litre?
500 millilitres.
How do I explain the sequence rule?
State that each term increases by six and demonstrate the next step.
What if my total seems too small?
Compare it with the largest individual quantity and estimate the sum.
Can ribbon leftovers be negative?
No. Recheck unit conversion and the number of complete pieces.
When should a parent give the method?
First let the learner explain the question and attempt a strategy.
