Reading passage: The repaired shelf
On Tuesday, Naliaka found three library books resting on a chair. Their shelf had a loose support, so the librarian had moved them before it fell. At break, Naliaka asked whether the reading club could help organise the books while an adult repaired the shelf. The librarian agreed, but reminded the club not to handle tools. They made paper labels and sorted the books by subject. When the shelf was ready, each pupil checked one label before replacing a book. By lunchtime, readers could find the science books without searching through every pile. Naliaka smiled when a younger pupil borrowed a book about birds. The club had not bought anything new, yet the library was easier to use.
Find an answer rather than a familiar word
For a retrieval question, point to the sentence that supplies the information. For an inference, combine a detail in the passage with a sensible explanation. Avoid using outside events that the story does not support.
After marking, reread with a purpose
Read the passage aloud in short sections and explain why the librarian moved the books. Then retell the order of events. Understanding the sequence helps with both comprehension and later writing tasks.
