Grade 11 Geography Practical Geography Notes

This focused study page introduces Practical Geography and provides a revision activity. Use it alongside your classroom notes and the current curriculum design.

Key ideas

Practical geography uses evidence from maps, observations and measurements. A map scale relates map distance to ground distance, but units must match before calculation. Fieldwork begins with a clear question and a suitable sampling method. Tables and graphs should identify units, locations and dates.

Practice activity

Design a small investigation of traffic near a school. Choose observation points, counting intervals and a safe recording method.

Check your response

State limitations such as weather, unusual events and a sample that is too short to represent typical conditions.

Revision questions

  1. Explain the key terms in this topic using your own words and a relevant example.
  2. Apply the ideas to the practice activity above. Show the evidence or steps supporting your answer.
  3. Identify one possible mistake or limitation in your response and explain how you would correct it.
