Grade 11 Geography Natural Systems and Processes Notes

This focused study page introduces Natural Systems and Processes and provides a revision activity. Use it alongside your classroom notes and the current curriculum design.

Key ideas

Natural systems involve interacting components and transfers of energy or matter. Weathering breaks down material in place; erosion removes it; transport moves it and deposition occurs when material is laid down. The balance of processes varies with rock type, slope, water, vegetation and human activity.

Practice activity

Compare two slopes after heavy rain, one with vegetation and one with bare soil. Explain possible differences in runoff and erosion.

Check your response

Link each observed feature to a process and identify what further evidence would support your explanation.

Revision questions

  1. Explain the key terms in this topic using your own words and a relevant example.
  2. Apply the ideas to the practice activity above. Show the evidence or steps supporting your answer.
  3. Identify one possible mistake or limitation in your response and explain how you would correct it.
