Good design answers explain why a choice fits a user and a constraint. These original scenarios combine planning, measurement, workshop safety and simple digital decisions for Grade 9 revision. They are not official assessment tasks.
On this page: original practice, explained answers and 20 short FAQs. Complete the tasks before reading the answers.
Begin with a user need
A pencil holder for a crowded desk needs to remain stable, occupy little space and avoid sharp edges. “Make it attractive” is not a complete design requirement. State the user, intended function and a condition the finished product must meet.
Make drawings communicate
Label the main sizes and show important features clearly. Use consistent units. A drawing can be neat but unhelpful if it omits the dimension needed to construct or assess the product.
Evaluate before improving
Compare the prototype with the original requirements. If it falls over, investigate its base and weight distribution. Change one feature, test again and record the result. An evaluation should lead to a justified improvement.
Practice questions and explained answers
1. Give two measurable requirements for a desk pencil holder.
Show suggested answer
Examples: it must hold ten pencils without falling and fit within a 12 cm by 12 cm base area. Other sensible measurable requirements can be accepted.
2. A drawing uses scale 1:5. What drawing length represents 400 mm?
Show suggested answer
400/5 = 80 mm on the drawing.
3. A project uses KSh 180 of timber, KSh 65 of glue and KSh 55 of finishing material. Find total material cost.
Show suggested answer
180 + 65 + 55 = KSh 300. Labour or transport would be separate if required.
4. Why smooth a cut edge before use?
Show suggested answer
To reduce the risk of splinters or cuts and improve the quality of handling.
5. A prototype tips over when filled. Suggest one improvement and explain it.
Show suggested answer
Widen the base so the loaded object is more stable. Test the revised design under the same loading conditions.
6. A suspicious message asks for your school account password. What should you do?
Show suggested answer
Do not share it or follow the link. Use a trusted route to contact the school and report the message.
7. Why record the source of an online design image?
Show suggested answer
It helps identify the creator, check reuse permissions and distinguish your work from another person’s work.
8. A file named final2 is difficult to identify. Suggest a clearer filename.
Show suggested answer
Example: PencilHolder_Design_GroupB_2026-10-19. Use the school’s naming convention and avoid personal information.
9. What is the purpose of a materials list?
Show suggested answer
It identifies the items and quantities needed so availability, cost and suitability can be checked before construction.
10. A tool is damaged. Should it be used carefully anyway?
Show suggested answer
No. Stop and report it to the teacher or workshop supervisor; use only approved equipment.
Frequently asked questions
Is a design brief a finished drawing?
No. It states the problem and intended user need.
What makes a requirement testable?
It has an observable condition, dimension, quantity or performance standard.
Does scale change the real object?
No. It changes the size of the representation.
Why show units on dimensions?
A number alone can be misread as millimetres, centimetres or another unit.
Can several materials be suitable?
Yes. Justify each choice using relevant properties and constraints.
Is the cheapest material always best?
No. Suitability, safety, durability and waste also matter.
How should I respond to a safety scenario?
Identify the hazard and give a practical action that reduces it.
What is a prototype?
A test version used to examine and improve a design.
Should I hide a failed test?
No. Record it and explain the improvement it suggests.
Can I claim an online image as my own?
No. Acknowledge sources and check reuse conditions.
How can I compare two designs fairly?
Test each against the same relevant requirements and conditions.
What does a budget exclude unless specified?
Costs such as labour, transport or overheads may be separate from the stated materials.
Why use a base-area limit?
It makes the space constraint measurable.
Is neat handwriting enough for a technical drawing?
No. The drawing must communicate the dimensions and features needed.
What should I do before selecting a material?
Check its properties, availability, intended use and safety.
Why keep versioned design files?
They allow earlier decisions and changes to be traced.
Can a password be shared with a supposed helper?
No. Verify requests through trusted school channels without disclosing it.
What is a constraint?
A limit such as cost, space, materials or time that the design must respect.
How do I explain an improvement?
State the observed problem, proposed change and expected benefit, then test it.
Must every answer use the same material?
No. Accept a justified choice that satisfies the stated need.
