Original practice questions with worked answers
Attempt each question before expanding its answer. These examples were written for this page; they are not extracts from a downloadable booklet or an official assessment paper.
1. Evaporation
Question: Why can a wet cloth become dry without being boiled?
Show answer and explanation
Some liquid water changes into water vapour and moves into the surrounding air. This is evaporation, which can occur below boiling point. Drying does not mean that the water has simply ceased to exist.
2. A fair comparison
Question: Two similar seedlings receive different amounts of water but the same light. Why keep the light similar?
Show answer and explanation
Light can also affect growth. Keeping it similar helps investigate the effect of the watering difference. A fair comparison changes the intended factor while controlling other important conditions as far as practical.
3. Food chains
Question: In grass → grasshopper → frog, which organism gets energy directly by eating the grass?
Show answer and explanation
The grasshopper eats the grass and obtains energy from that food. The arrows show the direction of energy transfer in this chain. The frog eats the grasshopper rather than obtaining energy directly by eating this grass.
4. Condensation
Question: Why may droplets form on the outside of a cold drinking glass?
Show answer and explanation
Water vapour in the surrounding air cools near the glass and changes to liquid droplets. The water does not have to leak through the glass. This change from gas to liquid is condensation.
5. An electric circuit
Question: Why might a bulb fail to light when a simple battery circuit has a gap?
Show answer and explanation
The gap breaks the conducting path, so current cannot travel around the complete circuit. Check connections with teacher-approved low-voltage equipment. Do not experiment with mains electricity.
How to review your Science and Technology answers
- Read the instruction. Identify whether you need to name, explain, compare, calculate or give an example. Answer the task that was actually set.
- Make your reasoning visible. Show working for a calculation or give the detail that supports a written answer. A correct result without understanding is difficult to apply to a new question.
- Correct one difficulty. Record the error and explain the change needed. Try a similar example later without copying the worked answer.
Teachers and parents can use a short set to start a discussion, identify a misunderstanding and select a follow-up task. These activities provide focused practice; they do not certify coverage of every curriculum outcome or replace classroom teaching.
