Original practice questions with worked answers
Attempt each question before expanding its answer. These examples were written for this page; they are not extracts from a downloadable booklet or an official assessment paper.
1. Adding fractions
Question: Calculate 3/4 + 1/8.
Show answer and explanation
Write 3/4 as 6/8. Add 6/8 + 1/8 to get 7/8. The equal denominator shows that the parts are the same size. Do not add the denominators to obtain sixteenths.
2. Perimeter
Question: A rectangular garden is 12 m long and 7 m wide. Find its perimeter.
Show answer and explanation
Perimeter is the distance around the edge: 12 + 7 + 12 + 7 = 38 m. Equivalently, use 2 × (12 + 7). The answer is a length, so the unit is metres, not square metres.
3. Money
Question: A learner pays KSh 500 for two books costing KSh 185 each. Find the change.
Show answer and explanation
The books cost 2 × 185 = KSh 370. Change is 500 − 370 = KSh 130. Calculate the total cost before subtracting it from the amount paid.
4. Area
Question: Find the area of a rectangle measuring 9 cm by 6 cm.
Show answer and explanation
Area = length × width = 9 × 6 = 54 cm². Area counts square units covering the surface. Adding the side lengths would address a different question.
5. Multiplication
Question: A carton holds 24 exercise books. How many books are in 15 cartons?
Show answer and explanation
24 × 15 = 24 × 10 + 24 × 5 = 240 + 120 = 360 books. Splitting 15 into 10 and 5 gives a useful method and a way to check written multiplication.
How to review your Mathematics answers
- Read the instruction. Identify whether you need to name, explain, compare, calculate or give an example. Answer the task that was actually set.
- Make your reasoning visible. Show working for a calculation or give the detail that supports a written answer. A correct result without understanding is difficult to apply to a new question.
- Correct one difficulty. Record the error and explain the change needed. Try a similar example later without copying the worked answer.
Teachers and parents can use a short set to start a discussion, identify a misunderstanding and select a follow-up task. These activities provide focused practice; they do not certify coverage of every curriculum outcome or replace classroom teaching.
