Three short practice activities

Ask the learner to try each question before opening the answer. Use familiar examples, drawings or safe objects as helpful. These questions were written for this page and are not extracts from the downloadable files.

1. Subject and verb

Question: Choose the correct word: “The children ___ reading.” Use is or are.

Show answer and adult support prompt

The children are reading. Children is plural, so are agrees with it. Adult prompt: Compare “The child is reading” with the plural sentence to make the change clear.

2. Meaning from context

Question: “After the long walk, Kim was exhausted and needed a rest.” What does exhausted mean?

Show answer and adult support prompt

It means very tired. The long walk and need for rest support that meaning. Adult prompt: Ask the learner to replace exhausted with very tired and check that the sentence still makes sense.

3. Joining ideas

Question: Join “It was raining” and “We stayed indoors” using so.

Show answer and adult support prompt

It was raining, so we stayed indoors. The rain is the reason and staying indoors is the result. Adult prompt: Check that the connection is clear when the learner reads the whole sentence aloud.

Using Grade 3 topical practice

  1. Choose something already taught. Read the instruction slowly. Check whether the learner understands the words before judging the answer.
  2. Allow an independent attempt. Give time to speak, draw, count or write as the activity requires. Avoid giving the answer before the learner has had a chance to think.
  3. Discuss one correction. Explain why a response works and try a similar example. Praise the useful strategy, such as checking a count or finding a reason in a sentence.

These activities support a short revision discussion. Match them to the learner’s classroom work and learning needs. They are not full examinations or a claim that every current curriculum outcome is covered.
