Grade 11 English Reading Notes

Revise Reading with a focused study outline for English. Use the explanation, activity and self-check below to organise your revision and identify areas that need further practice.

Topic overview

Reading comprehension combines literal understanding, inference and evaluation. An inference should be supported by clues in the text. The meaning of an unfamiliar word often depends on its sentence and wider context.

Try this revision activity

Choose a short passage, identify the main idea and support one inference with two textual clues.

Begin with a short plan before writing a full response. Identify what the question asks you to explain, calculate, compare or evaluate. Use a diagram, a worked calculation or a specific example where it makes the reasoning clearer.

Check your understanding

Answer the exact question and explain how the selected evidence supports your interpretation.

Compare your response with your class notes and the guidance from your teacher. If you find a difference, identify the exact point of disagreement and work through it. Make a short correction note so you can revisit the issue later.

Build your revision record

  1. Record the important terms and explain each in context.
  2. Summarise the main relationships using a diagram or a short outline.
  3. Complete an activity without looking at the explanation.
  4. Check your reasoning and correct errors clearly.
  5. Return to the topic after a gap and test what you remember.
