Grade 11 Computer Studies Software Development Notes

This focused study page introduces Software Development and provides a revision activity. Use it alongside your classroom notes and the current curriculum design.

Key ideas

Software development turns a problem into a tested solution. Define inputs, required outputs and rules before writing code. An algorithm describes the steps; sequence, selection and repetition control their order. Test normal, boundary and invalid inputs. A program that runs without crashing may still produce an incorrect result.

Practice activity

Write pseudocode for a program that accepts three valid marks and calculates their mean. Include a response to an out-of-range mark.

Check your response

Trace your algorithm manually and show the expected output for each test case.

Revision questions

  1. Explain the key terms in this topic using your own words and a relevant example.
  2. Apply the ideas to the practice activity above. Show the evidence or steps supporting your answer.
  3. Identify one possible mistake or limitation in your response and explain how you would correct it.
