Three short practice activities
Ask the learner to try each question before opening the answer. Use familiar examples, drawings or safe objects as helpful. These questions were written for this page and are not extracts from the downloadable files.
1. Counting
Question: You have 3 counters and receive 2 more. How many counters do you have?
Show answer and adult support prompt
You have 5 counters: 3 + 2 = 5. Adult prompt: Let the child move and count safe objects. Check one-to-one counting rather than asking the child to repeat a number without showing the total.
2. Comparing numbers
Question: Which number is greater: 4 or 7?
Show answer and adult support prompt
7 is greater than 4. Adult prompt: Compare groups of four and seven safe objects. Ask which group has more and then connect each group to its written number.
3. Shapes
Question: How many sides does a triangle have?
Show answer and adult support prompt
A triangle has 3 sides. Adult prompt: Trace the sides on a drawing and count them together. Show triangles in different orientations so the child does not associate the shape with only one position.
Using Grade 1 topical practice
- Choose something already taught. Read the instruction slowly. Check whether the learner understands the words before judging the answer.
- Allow an independent attempt. Give time to speak, draw, count or write as the activity requires. Avoid giving the answer before the learner has had a chance to think.
- Discuss one correction. Explain why a response works and try a similar example. Praise the useful strategy, such as checking a count or finding a reason in a sentence.
These activities support a short revision discussion. Match them to the learner’s classroom work and learning needs. They are not full examinations or a claim that every current curriculum outcome is covered.
