Three short practice activities
Ask the learner to try each question before opening the answer. Use familiar examples, drawings or safe objects as helpful. These questions were written for this page and are not extracts from the downloadable files.
1. Helping a friend
Question: A friend drops some crayons. What kind thing can you do?
Show answer and adult support prompt
Help pick up the crayons and return them. Adult prompt: Ask the child how this action makes the friend feel. Accept a simple oral response that connects kindness with practical help.
2. Saying thank you
Question: What can you say when someone helps you?
Show answer and adult support prompt
You can say “Thank you.” Adult prompt: Invite the child to name the help received. Practise a short, sincere response rather than requiring a long memorised speech.
3. Caring for a plant
Question: Name one way to care for a classroom plant.
Show answer and adult support prompt
Give it a suitable amount of water with an adult’s guidance. Adult prompt: Discuss gentle handling and care. Different plants need different amounts of water, so do not teach that more is always better.
Using Grade 1 topical practice
- Choose something already taught. Read the instruction slowly. Check whether the learner understands the words before judging the answer.
- Allow an independent attempt. Give time to speak, draw, count or write as the activity requires. Avoid giving the answer before the learner has had a chance to think.
- Discuss one correction. Explain why a response works and try a similar example. Praise the useful strategy, such as checking a count or finding a reason in a sentence.
These activities support a short revision discussion. Match them to the learner’s classroom work and learning needs. They are not full examinations or a claim that every current curriculum outcome is covered.
