2027 PP2 Language Activities Practical Tasks

2027 PP2 Language Activities practical tasks should help you plan, practise or review a clear learning goal. This page combines guidance for using practical tasks, an illustrative subject example, a follow-up task and general KCSERevision resource links. Adapt the activity to the current curriculum and the learning already taught in class.

PP2 Language Activities: further practice

Tell a short familiar story using pictures. Invite the child to name a character, describe an action and retell one event in their own words. Keep the activity playful and brief. Let the child respond by talking, pointing, moving or making before expecting a written response.

Planning check — PP2 Language Activities practical tasks: Identify the evidence a task should produce before gathering materials. Check time, available equipment and supervision, then record the learner’s process as well as the finished result.

PP2 Language Activities: plan, observe and explain a practical outcome

A practical task combines a clear purpose, an appropriate process and evidence of what happened. Begin with the teacher-approved brief and identify the knowledge the activity is intended to develop. Success is more than producing a finished object or completing a procedure; the learner should explain the decisions and observations.

  1. Clarify the brief. State the intended outcome, constraints and materials. For a technical or scientific task, use the approved supervised setting and procedure. A paper model or supplied data can support preparation before practical work.
  2. Prepare an observation record. Decide what will be noted, measured or compared and include suitable units where relevant. Set up the table or checklist before beginning so important evidence is not lost.
  3. Carry out and document. Follow the authorised process, record observations as they occur and note changes from the plan. Separate what was actually seen from the explanation proposed afterwards.
  4. Evaluate the result. Compare the outcome with the brief, discuss a limitation and suggest a specific improvement. Explain why the change could help and what evidence would show that it did.

Retain a labelled sketch, observation table or process note where useful. Photographs may supplement evidence with appropriate permission, but attractive images alone do not establish sound reasoning or a successful test.

Worked teaching example: giving a simple direction

Illustrative activity: Place a large toy beside a box, then move it inside or in front of the box while naming each position.

Task

Invite the child to place the toy according to one direction and then give a direction to the adult.

Worked reasoning or expected evidence

The response links a position word with an observable arrangement. Reversing roles checks whether the child can use the word as well as respond to it. Use a familiar reference object and clear space.

A common difficulty to check

A correct guess is not enough to establish the meaning of a position word. Change the starting arrangement and check a fresh instruction.

Extend or adapt the task

Use a drawing or an adapted object arrangement when moving the toy is difficult. Record the word understood independently.

PP2: move from a model to a small independent choice

Begin with a familiar example and invite the child to make a related choice without copying every step. Ask a brief question such as what comes next, which belongs together or how the child knows. Accept an explanation through talk, gesture or a simple drawing. An adult can read any text that exceeds the child’s current reading experience. Change only one feature when checking transfer. Keep the activity short and describe progress through participation and increasing independence rather than comparing children with a shared score.

Evidence to retain from the activity

Keep a plan, an observation or process record, and a short evaluation against the intended outcome. Where the example is conceptual, use diagrams or supplied information before any supervised practical stage. Explain one justified improvement instead of claiming success from a finished product alone.
