2027 PP1 Language Activities Assessment Rubrics

2027 PP1 Language Activities assessment rubrics should help you plan, practise or review a clear learning goal. This page combines guidance for using assessment rubrics, an illustrative subject example, a follow-up task and general KCSERevision resource links. Adapt the activity to the current curriculum and the learning already taught in class.

PP1 Language Activities: further practice

Tell a short familiar story using pictures. Invite the child to name a character, describe an action and retell one event in their own words. Keep the activity playful and brief. Let the child respond by talking, pointing, moving or making before expecting a written response.

Planning check — PP1 Language Activities assessment rubrics: Choose an observable feature of performance and compare evidence against its descriptors. Explain the next improvement needed rather than treating a level label as feedback by itself.

PP1 Language Activities: describe observable quality at different levels

A rubric makes the assessment criteria visible before judging the work. Choose criteria that match the task, such as accuracy, use of evidence, reasoning or control of a practical skill. Keep criteria distinct so that the same feature is not rewarded repeatedly under different headings.

  1. Select a small set of criteria. Identify what matters most in the example below. A criterion should concern something that can be observed in the response rather than an inferred trait such as being clever or working hard.
  2. Describe a secure response. State the features of a successful answer or performance in plain language. Include the important reasoning, relevant evidence and task-specific accuracy.
  3. Describe developing evidence. Explain what is partly present and what is still missing. Replace vague labels such as good and poor with a description that helps the learner improve.
  4. Check consistency. Apply the draft descriptors to a few sample responses. If reasonable assessors interpret a descriptor differently, refine it and discuss what evidence resolves the uncertainty.

Give feedback by criterion, then identify a priority for improvement. Do not invent official scoring bands or certification standards. Any marks or levels used for classroom practice should be identified as local assessment choices and checked against school requirements.

Worked teaching example: giving a simple direction

Illustrative activity: Place a large toy beside a box, then move it inside or in front of the box while naming each position.

Task

Invite the child to place the toy according to one direction and then give a direction to the adult.

Worked reasoning or expected evidence

The response links a position word with an observable arrangement. Reversing roles checks whether the child can use the word as well as respond to it. Use a familiar reference object and clear space.

A common difficulty to check

A correct guess is not enough to establish the meaning of a position word. Change the starting arrangement and check a fresh instruction.

Extend or adapt the task

Use a drawing or an adapted object arrangement when moving the toy is difficult. Record the word understood independently.

PP1: make the first response concrete and playful

Use familiar objects, clear pictures, talk and movement before expecting a written answer. Give one instruction at a time and model a short response. Allow the child to point, name, sort or act to show meaning. If the example contains a written passage, an adult can read or retell a suitable short part. Observe what the child does independently and stop before the task becomes tiring. A hesitant spoken response can reflect unfamiliar vocabulary rather than absence of understanding. Record one specific observation to help choose the next activity.

Illustrative descriptors for this response

Secure evidence answers the task accurately and justifies the important reasoning. Developing evidence contains a relevant idea but leaves a needed step unsupported. An initial response may identify part of the issue while requiring a prompt to proceed. Adapt these descriptors to the actual task; they are not official scoring bands.
