Grade 11 Literature in English Poetry Notes
Revise Poetry with a focused study outline for Literature in English. Use the explanation, activity and self-check below to organise your revision and identify areas that need further practice.
Topic overview
Poetry analysis considers speaker, subject, language, structure and effect. The speaker is not automatically the poet. A technique matters because of how it contributes to meaning or the reader’s response.
Try this revision activity
Select a short poem and explain the effect of one image using words from the poem as evidence.
Begin with a short plan before writing a full response. Identify what the question asks you to explain, calculate, compare or evaluate. Use a diagram, a worked calculation or a specific example where it makes the reasoning clearer.
Check your understanding
Connect technique, evidence and interpretation in the same explanation.
Compare your response with your class notes and the guidance from your teacher. If you find a difference, identify the exact point of disagreement and work through it. Make a short correction note so you can revisit the issue later.
