Grade 11 Core Mathematics Calculus Notes
Revise Calculus with a focused study outline for Core Mathematics. Use the explanation, activity and self-check below to organise your revision and identify areas that need further practice.
Topic overview
Calculus studies change and accumulation. A derivative describes an instantaneous rate of change. An integral can represent accumulated change or signed area, depending on the context.
Try this revision activity
For y = x², find the derivative and evaluate the gradient at x = 3. Explain what that gradient describes.
Begin with a short plan before writing a full response. Identify what the question asks you to explain, calculate, compare or evaluate. Use a diagram, a worked calculation or a specific example where it makes the reasoning clearer.
Check your understanding
Distinguish the function value from its rate of change and retain units when interpreting an application.
Compare your response with your class notes and the guidance from your teacher. If you find a difference, identify the exact point of disagreement and work through it. Make a short correction note so you can revisit the issue later.
Build your revision record
- Record the important terms and explain each in context.
- Summarise the main relationships using a diagram or a short outline.
- Complete an activity without looking at the explanation.
- Check your reasoning and correct errors clearly.
- Return to the topic after a gap and test what you remember.
