Creating a Copyright-Safe Classroom Resource

Create a classroom resource with a clear provenance record

The finished resource in this case is an original comparison worksheet. Its text, small dataset and questions were created for this exercise; it contains no external photograph, logo, textbook extract or pupil work. A provenance record documents those choices and the excluded alternatives. It is a conservative production example, not a legal determination about a third-party work.

Complete learner worksheet CR01 version 1

Task: A fictional reading corner has three boxes of blank cards. Box A has 18 cards, Box B has 27 and Box C has 15. No cards move during Questions 1 and 2. Use the counts below; no image or outside pack is needed.

Original invented card counts
Box Number of cards
A 18
B 27
C 15

1. Which box has the most cards? Give its letter and count.
2. How many more cards are in B than C? Show the calculation.
3. Six cards move from B to C. Give all three new counts and show that the total is unchanged.
4. A caption says “Moving six cards makes the collection larger.” Rewrite it using the evidence. Write your responses on paper; this page does not save typed answers.

Worked answer and review

1. B has 27, greater than 18 and 15. 2. 27 − 15 = 12. 3. A stays 18; B becomes 21; C becomes 21. Before: 18+27+15=60; after: 18+21+21=60. 4. “Six cards moved between boxes, so the distribution changed while the total remained 60.” A valid explanation distinguishes transfer from adding new cards. A wrong total should lead to tracing the same six cards at both source and destination.

Completed provenance and permissions decision log

CR01 provenance record
Component or proposal Origin and inspected evidence Decision for CR01 Reason and boundary
Worksheet wording and questions New original wording written for this classroom case; version CR01-v1, 6 October 2026. Included. No copied question bank or official-paper wording is represented.
Counts and table Invented values 18,27,15; native table created here. Included, clearly fictional. Not survey data, a classroom result or an external dataset.
Decoration proposal: online photo of pupils Hypothetical proposed photo; no actual photo obtained, no exact licence or consent record inspected. Excluded before production. The job does not need a photograph; do not invent a rights/consent check or download one for decoration.
Proposal: scan a workbook page Hypothetical scan; no permission or applicable licence supplied. Excluded; original task authored instead. The worksheet needs the comparison skill, not that publisher’s specific expression.
Publisher or school logo No authorised logo asset supplied. Excluded. No affiliation or official approval is implied.
WIPO guidance link WIPO copyright FAQ, consulted 6 October 2026. Linked as background, not copied into the worksheet. Guidance is distinct from permission to reuse a particular resource.

WIPO explains that online availability does not itself put a work in the public domain. Its discussion of copyright questions and limitations and exceptions does not supply a blanket school-use permission. For an actual third-party asset, record the exact creator, item, version, source, relevant licence/permission, permitted use and conditions, then obtain appropriate rights advice if unclear. This case avoids needing such an asset.

Completed review and independent production decision

Content review: all four answers were recomputed, box labels do not rely on colour, the data is also stated in prose, and the question never depends on a picture of a real child. Intended use: teacher-selected comparison and conservation-of-total practice. Current curriculum fit, actual print layout and any publication licence decision remain separate checks. No licence over third-party material is created by this record.

Practice: A colleague proposes replacing the original table with a screenshot from a paid resource because “crediting the website makes it safe”. Write a decision and preserve the teaching job.

Worked answer and review

Do not treat attribution alone as permission. Record the proposed screenshot as excluded/pending a check of the exact work and intended use; do not reproduce it first. Retain CR01’s complete original table and tasks, which already serve the outcome. If authorised reuse is later established, keep the actual permission/licence evidence and its conditions with the selected version; do not label an uninspected screenshot approved.
