Junior School: Measuring, Marking and Evaluating a Paper Model
A model needs a stated target before its accuracy can be judged. “It looks neat” does not tell a designer whether the dimensions match the brief or whether the label is readable. This activity follows one safe paper prototype from dimensions to a completed evaluation record. Its records are invented examples, not measurements of a learner’s work.
Teacher-use draft for junior school. Choose learners who can read a millimetre ruler and subtract measurements; exact grade, strand and term allocation remains for subject review. The complete activity can be done on paper from the supplied records. Any optional folding uses only a smooth, teacher-prepared paper rectangle, a pencil and a blunt-edged ruler. Learners do not cut, score with a blade, staple, heat or fabricate components.
The complete prototype brief
Plan a tabletop name tent from one rectangle 180 mm wide and 240 mm long. A fold runs across the full width, 120 mm from either short edge, creating two equal 180 mm by 120 mm faces. The model label is “READING DESK”. It belongs on one face, centred by eye, with its nearest ink at least 15 mm from every edge of that face. The teacher chooses an uncluttered desk for a still-air display check; the model is not a load-bearing structure.
For this exercise, each measured width, length and fold-position target allows an absolute difference of at most 2 mm. The margin must be at least 15 mm; that minimum does not get the ±2 mm allowance. These are classroom design criteria, not manufacturing standards. A folded face’s 120 mm paper length is not the vertical height of the standing tent: the standing height depends on how far its two feet are apart.
| Top edge, y = 0 mm | Width from x = 0 to x = 180 mm | |
|---|---|---|
| First face | Left edge x = 0 | Face extends from y = 0 to y = 120; label stays within its margins |
| Fold line, y = 120 mm | Connect the left and right 120 mm marks across the whole width | |
| Second face | Left edge x = 0 | Face extends from y = 120 to y = 240 |
| Bottom edge, y = 240 mm | Width from x = 0 to x = 180 mm | |
Coordinates identify positions on the flat paper. They are not instructions to measure the displayed table. The fold divides the 240 mm length into 120 + 120 mm; 180 mm = 18 cm and 240 mm = 24 cm. Keep units visible instead of combining a millimetre target with an unconverted centimetre reading.
An ordered, supervised workflow
- Read the brief and record the targets before touching the model. Check that the prepared sheet and desk are suitable with the teacher; use the record-only route if they are not.
- Check the sheet dimensions. Align the ruler’s zero mark, rather than its physical end, with the starting edge. Read from above as far as practical. If zero cannot be aligned, subtract the two endpoint readings.
- From the same top edge, mark 120 mm on the left and right sides. Join those marks lightly with a pencil line. Measuring both sides helps avoid a slanting fold.
- With teacher guidance, fold gently on the marked line using fingers. Add the label on the intended face; keep it clear of the fold and outer edges. No sharp scoring tool is part of this task.
- Place the model in the agreed still-air location. Record whether it remains standing during the supplied 30-second classroom check and whether the full label can be read from the agreed position. The time is a common comparison condition, not a safety test.
- Compare each result with its own criterion, propose one precise revision, and keep the original record beside the recheck.
Completed fictional evaluation
| Check | Target | P1 record | Judgment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Width | 180 mm ±2 | 179 mm | Difference 1 mm; meets criterion |
| Full length | 240 mm ±2 | 242 mm | Difference 2 mm; meets inclusive limit |
| Fold from top, left | 120 mm ±2 | 121 mm | Difference 1 mm; meets criterion |
| Fold from top, right | 120 mm ±2 | 124 mm | Difference 4 mm; needs revision |
| Nearest label ink to edge | At least 15 mm | 12 mm | 3 mm below minimum |
| Display observation | Stands for 30 seconds; full label readable | Standing throughout; full label readable | Both observations meet their stated checks |
A supported evaluation is: “P1 meets width, full length, left-fold and display checks. The right fold mark is too far from the top and the label margin is too small. Re-mark both fold endpoints from the same reference edge on a fresh prepared sheet, and place the nearest ink at least 15 mm inside the face. Recheck those dimensions.” Standing successfully does not erase the dimension errors. Equally, one incorrect fold mark does not prove every measurement failed.
Independent measurement check
For a fresh model P2, a ruler’s starting-edge reading is 18 mm and its finishing-edge reading is 199 mm. The full sheet length is 239 mm. Both fold marks are 119 mm from the top. The nearest label ink is 15 mm from an edge. The display check is not recorded. Calculate the width, evaluate every available criterion and state what remains unknown.
Checked answer: width = 199 − 18 = 181 mm, a 1 mm difference from target. Length differs by 1 mm; both fold marks differ by 1 mm; all meet the stated dimensional allowances. The 15 mm margin meets the minimum exactly. The two face lengths along the sheet are 119 mm and 239 − 119 = 120 mm; they are not evidence of an exactly central fold. No display observation was supplied, so standing and readability remain unverified. Do not copy P1’s outcome into P2.
Review rubric: a secure response names the reference edges and units, uses endpoint differences correctly, applies each allowance including its boundary, and distinguishes measured evidence from missing checks. A developing response may calculate correctly but omit a criterion; an unsupported response declares overall success from appearance alone. Ask for the missing comparison before requiring a new model.
