Make every French answer traceable
A reading answer needs two things: the information requested and enough evidence to justify it. Understanding every word is helpful, but it is not a condition for answering every question. First identify the kind of information you need. Then locate the relevant sentence, check its relationship to nearby sentences and write a concise response. The messages, people and situations in this lesson are original and fictional.
Use three labels as you read: stated, inferred and not supplied. A stated detail appears directly. An inference joins details that actually appear. Information not supplied cannot be recovered by guessing what would probably happen in real life. An answer can be grammatically excellent and still fail this evidence test.
| Question cue | Target information | Useful answer shape |
|---|---|---|
| Qui ? | A person or group | C’est Amel. / Les membres du club. |
| Où ? | A place | Dans la petite salle. |
| Quand ? À quelle heure ? | A date, period or clock time | Vendredi. / À seize heures. |
| Pourquoi ? | A supported reason | Parce que la salle est occupée. |
| Comment ? | A method or manner, according to context | À pied. / Avec l’aide de son amie. |
Worked case 1: a changed club meeting
Bonjour à tous les membres du club de lecture. Notre réunion de jeudi est déplacée à vendredi, à seize heures. La bibliothèque accueille un autre groupe jeudi. Vendredi, nous utiliserons la petite salle près du jardin. Apportez votre carnet ; Amel fournira les textes. Merci de lui signaler votre absence avant mercredi soir. — Idriss
| Question | Model answer | Evidence and reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| À qui ce message s’adresse-t-il ? | Il s’adresse aux membres du club de lecture. | The opening names the recipients. Idriss signs the message; he is its sender. |
| Pourquoi la réunion est-elle déplacée ? | Parce que la bibliothèque accueille un autre groupe jeudi. | The following sentence supplies the reason, although it does not begin with parce que. |
| Où aura lieu la réunion ? | Dans la petite salle près du jardin. | The question concerns the revised arrangement, not the original room. |
| À qui faut-il signaler son absence ? | À Amel. | Lui refers back to Amel in the preceding sentence. |
Notice the trap in copying the nearest noun. Answering « vendredi » to the reason question gives the new day, not the cause. Similarly, the garden locates the room; the message does not say that the meeting will take place outside. Keep the whole location phrase when its final words prevent a misunderstanding.
A justified inference is that the members need not bring the reading texts, because Amel will provide them. It is not justified to say that she wrote the texts or that Idriss dislikes Thursday meetings. Neither claim follows from the message.
Worked case 2: a lost-object message
Hier, après l’atelier de dessin, j’ai trouvé une trousse verte sous une chaise. Elle contient deux crayons et une petite règle, mais aucun nom. J’ai confié la trousse à Malo, à l’accueil. Si elle vous appartient, décrivez le dessin qui figure sur le tissu. Vous pouvez la récupérer jusqu’à dix-sept heures. — Salomé
| Question | Model answer | Evidence and reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Qui a trouvé la trousse ? | Salomé a trouvé la trousse. | J’ai trouvé belongs to the signed speaker, Salomé. |
| Où se trouve-t-elle maintenant ? | Elle se trouve à l’accueil, avec Malo. | The transfer changes the location. Under the chair is where it was found. |
| Comment la personne peut-elle montrer que la trousse lui appartient ? | Elle peut décrire le dessin sur le tissu. | The message explicitly requests a description. |
| Quel dessin y a-t-il sur la trousse ? | Le message ne le précise pas. | There is a drawing, but its content is withheld. |
Here elle in the passage refers to la trousse, a grammatically feminine noun. It does not identify a female owner. The finder knows the colour and contents, but the reader cannot identify the owner from those details alone. Do not turn a grammatical gender into biographical evidence.
The answer « Chez Malo » would add an unsupported location: it normally suggests Malo’s home or premises. Retain « à l’accueil ». A small change of preposition can change the fact you report.
Worked case 3: an account of a visit
Samedi, Noura et son cousin Éli ont visité un atelier de reliure. Au début, Noura voulait seulement regarder les couvertures. L’artisane leur a ensuite montré comment assembler les pages. Noura a posé plusieurs questions et a demandé la date du prochain atelier. Éli, lui, a dessiné une ancienne presse. Ils sont repartis à midi, car Éli avait rendez-vous avec sa sœur.
| Question | Model answer | Evidence and reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Qu’a montré l’artisane aux visiteurs ? | Elle leur a montré comment assembler les pages. | Keep the action demonstrated, rather than merely naming the workshop. |
| Qu’est-ce qui suggère que Noura s’est intéressée à l’activité ? | Elle a posé plusieurs questions et demandé la date du prochain atelier. | Two stated actions support the inference of interest. |
| Pourquoi sont-ils repartis à midi ? | Parce qu’Éli avait rendez-vous avec sa sœur. | Car introduces the stated reason. |
It is reasonable to describe Noura’s growing interest. It is not reasonable to announce that she enrolled in the next workshop: asking for a date is not registering. The sentence about Éli’s drawing also prevents you from attributing that drawing to Noura. Recheck names whenever two people share a passage.
Three solved fresh tasks
Task 1: select the final arrangement
« Le groupe devait partir à neuf heures. Le départ est finalement fixé à neuf heures trente. Rendez-vous devant le portail. » À quelle heure le groupe partira-t-il ?
Solution: Le groupe partira à neuf heures trente. The first time is superseded. Finalement signals the updated information; the gate answers a different question.
Task 2: restore the correct referent
« Yanis donne une enveloppe à Rose. Elle la range dans son sac. » Qui range l’enveloppe ?
Solution: Rose range l’enveloppe. Subject elle refers to Rose; object la refers to the envelope. The two pronouns perform different jobs.
Task 3: reject an invented reason
« Inès choisit un cahier jaune. Elle paie puis quitte le magasin. » Pourquoi choisit-elle ce cahier ?
Solution: Le texte ne donne pas la raison de son choix. Neither a favourite colour nor a low price is stated. The safe answer marks the information gap instead of filling it imaginatively.
A final answer check
Underline the question cue, circle the relevant name or pronoun and identify the smallest useful evidence span. Draft your answer, then ask whether every added detail is warranted. Full sentences are useful practice, but a short phrase may convey the same information when the task allows it. Quoting is not a substitute for choosing: a whole paragraph can contain both the old arrangement and the new one.
Frequently asked questions
Must I translate the whole passage first?
No. Identify its purpose and the information each question needs. Translate a difficult phrase only when it affects the answer.
Can a reason appear without parce que?
Yes. A neighbouring sentence or a connector such as car may state the cause. Explain the link rather than searching for one fixed word.
Should I copy the exact sentence?
A short quotation can provide evidence. A concise paraphrase is also valid when it preserves the meaning and uses the correct referents.
What if two answers mean the same thing?
Accept grammatical equivalents that preserve all requested information. An answer need not match the model word for word.
How do I recognise an unsupported inference?
Ask which stated details support it. If the explanation depends mainly on what people usually do, the passage may not justify it.
Can I answer in the present when the question concerns a past event?
Usually retain the relevant past viewpoint in a full sentence. A name or place alone does not require a verb, but any verb you add must fit.
What should I do when information is missing?
Say that the text does not specify it. Distinguishing absence of evidence from a negative fact is part of careful comprehension.
