2027 Grade 5 Mathematics schemes of work should help you plan, practise or review a clear learning goal. This page combines guidance for using schemes of work, an illustrative subject example, a follow-up task and general KCSERevision resource links. Adapt the activity to the current curriculum and the learning already taught in class.
Grade 5 Mathematics: KCSERevision resources
Grade 5 Mathematics: further practice
A rectangular noticeboard is 120 cm long and 80 cm wide. Estimate the length of ribbon needed around its edge, calculate it and state the units. The perimeter is 400 cm. Explain why multiplying length by width answers a different question, using a labelled sketch to support the distinction. Ask for an explanation alongside the answer or product. Use one changed example to check whether the learner can transfer the idea.
Planning check — Grade 5 Mathematics schemes of work: Compare the resource’s textbook or edition label with the book used in class. Rework dates and lesson spacing around the school calendar before adopting a sequence.
Grade 5 Mathematics: sequence learning with room to respond
A scheme of work connects curriculum intentions to a sequence over the available teaching period. Begin with the current design, school calendar and actual lesson allocation. Use existing resources as references, then adapt the order to prerequisite knowledge and the time needed for practice and feedback.
- Identify prerequisites. Before placing the example in a sequence, list the knowledge or skill needed to attempt it. A task that requires an untaught method may need an earlier lesson or a simpler representation.
- Plan progression. Move from recognition and explanation toward application or evaluation where appropriate. State what changes between one lesson and the next so that the sequence develops understanding rather than repeating similar worksheets.
- Allocate evidence checks. Place a short assessment after sufficient practice. Specify what response will show readiness to move forward and what support will be available when the evidence reveals a gap.
- Keep revision possible. Leave room for interruptions, reteaching and a changed pace. Record adjustments without erasing the original intention, so the plan remains understandable to another teacher.
Useful columns include period, outcome, learning experience, resources, assessment evidence and remarks. Add dates according to the actual school calendar. Do not invent 2027 term dates or present a copied sequence as already approved by the school.
Worked teaching example: adding fractions with a common unit
Illustrative activity: One person uses 1/4 of a sheet and another uses 1/8 of the same-sized sheet. A diagram can divide one whole sheet into 8 equal parts.
Task
Find the combined fraction used. Explain why the whole must be the same size in both quantities and show a common denominator.
Worked reasoning or expected evidence
One 4th equals two 8ths, so the sum is 2/8 + 1/8 = 3/8. In simplest form this is 3/8. The denominator identifies the size of the equal parts; the numerator counts how many of those parts are used.
A common difficulty to check
Adding denominators treats differently sized parts as if they were a common unit. Draw the same whole, mark equal parts and convert both quantities before combining them.
Extend or adapt the task
Find the fraction of the sheet remaining: 1 − 3/8 = 5/8. Explain how the diagram supports the calculation.
Grade 5: compare methods and justify a choice
Give two possible responses to the example and ask which is better supported. The aim is to make the learner notice the evidence or method behind an answer. A useful comparison can include one partly correct response so the discussion identifies exactly where it stops working. Follow with an independent task and ask for a short justification. Avoid assessing only speed when the intention is reasoning. Use the explanation to decide whether the next activity should strengthen a prerequisite, provide more varied practice or extend the idea.
Place the example in a sequence
Write a three-step sequence: prerequisite practice, the illustrated task and a changed application. State what evidence permits the class to move between steps. Leave the dates blank until you use the actual school calendar and lesson allocation.
